Athens Chamber Singers invite you to our Spring Concert
Criers, Ringers and Auctioneers
A concert of 16th and 20th-century street sounds
Stepping back in time, the first half of our concert paints a musical picture of what the streets sounded like in 16th-century London, filled with street vendors promoting their wares by singing catchy phrases, and the ringing of bells to
mark the times of day and calling people to
church and home. By contrast, the second
half presents a 20th-century setting of
similar street cries and bell sounds, along
with a delightful piece that provides an
Americana counterpart, a setting of auction
cries.
This repertoire is rather unusual for a typical
choral concert, as is the accompaniment:
the 16th-century music will feature a consort
of violas da gamba, and the 20th-century
music will be accompanied by piano duet.
